Feed in Tariff - Wind Turbines

In April 2010 the UK Government introduced the Feed in Tariff (FIT) which means you get paid for producing energy from natural resources. If eligible for FIT you are able to benefit in three ways:

  • Generation tariff – a rate paid by the energy supplier for each unit (kWh) of electricity you generate. This rate will change, and will be index linked, each year for new entrants to the scheme, but once you join you will continue on the same tariff for 20 years.
  • Export tariff - For grid connected turbines you will receive an additional 3p/kWh from your energy supplier for each unit you export back to the grid (when it isn’t used on site).
  • Lower electricity bills – By generating your own electicity means you won't need to buy as much off you electricity supplier.

To benefit from FiT you must use an MCS (Micro Certification Scheme) accredited installer and machine for units up to 50kW. Above 50kW only the installer needs to be MCS accredited.
